Where Did January Go?

Evil Kitten

OMG, what happened, it can't be the end of January already! I have so much to do! 3 birthday's in February, Valentine's Day gifts to make, an Arts & Crafts show to go to in Asheville, NC and I need to alter some clothes! I have nothing to wear!
Plus look at my evil kitten who is not helping me get any work done. This was me trying to make a shirt for my niece's birthday gift! I have 4 of 7 parts done! I'm hoping she's all tuckered out from harassing me this afternoon, so I can get work done this evening!
I visited my neighbor last night and I learned so much I just have to share! She bought this awesome book called The Knitter's Book of Yarn. Which tells you everything you could ever want to know about yarn, there weights, how warm they are, etc... I learned that wool is not the friend I thought it was. It will not keep me as warm as angora from a rabbit. Which is 8 times warmer than wool! Seriously that's a lot when it's in the negative numbers! Or alpaca which I think is eight times warmer than wool but is much denser so an alpaca sweater will weigh a ton compared to a wool sweater! The info can go on and on. So I need this book but it has to wait until I have the time to sit and read! I can tell there will be some serious knitting changes around here in the up coming year!
So good bye January, Helloooooo February!

Winter Weather???

Usually by now Mother Nature has blessed us with 3-15 feet of snow. Well maybe not 15' but it sure feels like it when you have to shovel. The forecast for this weekend are temperatures in the 50's not the 20's. The 50's!!
Our winter has been off and on with the snow and the warm weather. It's like MN can't decide what she wants. Warm, cold, warm, cold. Is she having hot flashes? Then cold chills? Or is it global warming. I do not know but I wish it would stay with one or the other. When the snow melts it's gross and muddy. The chickens love it because they can run around and scratch till sunset. I don't like it because there should be snow.
I'm worried that my children will not enjoy the snow like I did growing up. The 5 feet of beautiful untouched snow that my brothers and I crafted into whatever our imaginations desired. A playground of fun, with snow angels, forts, sledding hills, snow people, etc... Mud just isn't the same and it sticks to you. Then you have to take a bath and wash everything because it follows you into the house. With snow, it will melt away when you bring it in.
Now that it's a new year, we've been talking about home improvement projects that we would like to get done over the course of the summer. A new energy efficient furnace, a door off the reading room, maybe 3 new windows in the kitchen to be, new lighting for the studio, insulating the basement, etc... Out of this list I can see maybe 2-3 getting done. That maybe pushing it but you have to have goals to reach for, right? It is to early to be think about stuff like this?
The new furnace will help cut down on the clutter of the current furnace. It's huge! The one we are looking at getting is 2 times smaller than the one we have. It's like a monster furnace that no one wanted and was tossed in our basement. At least we were able to get rid of the original coal burning furnace that was in the basement last summer. That was actually bigger than the thing we use now! It could have fit 4-5 people in it. When the house was built, they had to put the furnace in the basement first and then built around it. It was seriously that enormous and probably not that energy efficient!! Summer is still 6 months away, still lots of things to add to the to do list.

The Race

Thanksgiving has come and gone.  Usually by this time every year I have all my shopping done and should be checking to make sure I didn't forget everyone.  It's not happening this year.  So the race is on to make gifts.
I decided to do this because I have quite a few requests and gifts half done.  I never finish them because in the past I have bought gifts.  So this is the year to clean out the closet.  I'm trying to get rid of the clutter.  There's a lot of clutter here, so it will take years.
On my list is a scarf for my brother, napkins for 2 coworkers of my husband, a sweater tea cozy for my MIL, a drawing book and fabric cover for my niece, socks for my husband (he knows he's getting them) and I can't think of what else is on the list.
I would like to make more ornaments, not fairies, some angels, and little bird wreaths.  I don't know if it will happen.  The last 4 fairy ornaments are coming together slowly.  I may put them aside until next year.  So they can go on that list!  Plus I have to make a gift for the yankee gift exchange that is happening next friday!  So the fairies will have to be done soon or tossed in the clutter.  I'm making a cashmere water bottle cover for the exchange.  I've never done anything like it before but I have some ideas floating around.
It's a very busy week for all around here.  This weekend my husband is doing a Christmas art show.  We are also attending a Christmas party, which I need to make cookies for.  Girl Scouts for my daughter and the class geckos need to go back to school.
Now that I'm thinking about it, I need to go to work.  Christmas is right around the corner!  Yikes!!!
